What is under the blades matters most. Here is how backing, base stone and drainage fit together.
A turf lawn is a system. Blades are stitched into a backing, the backing sits on a compacted stone base and the whole assembly drains through the backing and into the ground. If any layer is weak, the whole lawn suffers. Thin backing tears, a poor base ripples and bad drainage holds water and odor.
Quality turf has a sturdy, perforated backing with a good coating that locks in the fibers. Under it, a few inches of compacted crushed stone give a firm, free-draining platform, topped with a fine screening layer for a smooth finish. A weed barrier is often added between the soil and the stone. On clay or low ground, drain pipes help. We explain each layer and why it matters so you can compare quotes fairly.
