Smooth out bumps, ruts and low spots with a thin layer of quality soil, so the lawn mows even and drains well.
A bumpy lawn is hard to mow, easy to trip on and quick to scalp on the high spots. Settling over old trenches, tree stump holes, mole tunnels and years of mowing leave low spots that hold water and high spots that dry out. You do not have to rip up the lawn to fix it. Often the answer is leveling with a thin layer of soil, worked into the grass.
We spread a blend of screened topsoil and sand or compost across the low areas in thin layers, then drag and rake it so the grass grows up through it. Done in the right season, the grass fills in quickly and the surface smooths out. For deeper holes, we lift the turf, fill underneath and set it back. Topdressing can also improve soil over time, and pairs well with aeration and overseeding.
Soil is added a half inch or so at a time, so grass can grow through it instead of being smothered.
For bigger low spots we cut and lift the turf, fill the hole and replace the sod, which avoids burying healthy grass.
Leveling works best when grass is growing strongly: spring or early summer for warm-season grasses and fall for fescue.
Aerating before topdressing lets the soil settle into the holes and helps improve the root zone at the same time.

You tell us about your yard and what you want, a new lawn, a fix for a worn one or a turf area, and we set a visit that fits your day.
We walk the property, measure each area, check sun, shade, soil and drainage and take photos of anything of note.
We explain your options for sod, turf or both, and give you a written scope with quantities, timing and clear pricing.
We mark utilities, remove old turf, set the grade, loosen and improve the soil and build the base before anything new goes down.
We lay sod in tight, staggered rows or install turf over a compacted stone base, with clean edges and tight seams.
We clean up, roll or brush the surface, walk you through the watering and care plan and set a reminder for your next check.
A thin layer of soil or compost spread over the lawn to smooth the surface and improve the soil.
About a half inch to an inch at a time. Deeper areas need the turf lifted and replaced.
Yes, when the layer is thin and applied while the grass is actively growing.
It can smooth the surface, though we also suggest controlling the pests causing the tunnels.
