The most common lawn grass in Middle Tennessee: deep green, tough, shade tolerant and a little demanding in July.
Tall fescue is a cool-season bunch grass with broad blades, a deep root system and a rich green color. In the transition zone, where Nashville sits, it stays green most of the year, tolerates part shade and handles heat better than most cool-season grasses. It is the default choice for many Middle Tennessee yards.
Its weak points are summer stress and thinning over time. Fescue grows in clumps and does not spread, so it needs overseeding every fall to stay thick. It may brown in a hot dry spell, and it needs regular watering. Mow it tall, around three and a half to four inches, water deeply, feed in fall and early spring and keep weeds from taking hold in thin areas. With that routine, a fescue lawn is tough, comfortable and handsome.
