Lawns for Slopes and Hillsides

Hills are everywhere in Middle Tennessee. Here is how to hold a slope with grass, and when you need more than grass.

Middle Tennessee is rolling country, and many yards include a bank, a hillside or a drainage swale. Slopes are hard on lawns. Seed washes away in the first storm, loose soil gullies and mowing gets harder and more dangerous as the angle increases. Left bare, a slope can send mud into the street and into a neighbor's yard.

Sod is one of the best tools for slopes because it arrives with roots already knitted together. We grade the surface to a stable angle, pin the sod with stakes, add erosion matting where needed and send roof or driveway runoff somewhere else before it can undo the work. On very steep banks, terracing, retaining walls or groundcovers are safer and more attractive than a lawn you cannot mow. We tell you when a slope is beyond what grass can do.

Questions

Slopes and Hillsides FAQ

Will sod stay on a slope?

On moderate slopes, yes, with proper pinning and watering. Steeper banks need matting or other solutions.

How steep is too steep for a lawn?

Slopes steeper than about three to one are hard to mow safely. Groundcovers or walls may be better.

Is hydroseed or sod better on hills?

Both work. Sod protects immediately, and hydroseed costs less on large areas. We compare them for your slope.
