How sod is cut, sold and delivered, and how to figure out how many pallets your yard really needs.
Sod is sold in pieces cut from the field and stacked on pallets. Most is cut as rolls, which are easy to carry and unroll by hand. Some farms cut larger slabs, which are handled by machine and make installation faster on big jobs. Each pallet covers a set area, often around four hundred and fifty to five hundred square feet, though sizes vary by farm and grass type.
Ordering well takes a little math. Measure the area, add an allowance of five to ten percent for cuts and curves, and divide by the pallet coverage. Sod is perishable, so plan to lay it within a day of delivery, especially in summer. Store pallets in shade if you must wait, keep them off the sun-baked driveway edge and have the soil prepared and your crew ready before the truck arrives.
