Pull small plugs of soil from a compacted lawn so air, water and nutrients can reach the roots again.
Compaction is the quiet killer of Middle Tennessee lawns. Clay soil packs down under foot traffic, mowers and construction equipment until water runs off instead of soaking in and roots cannot push downward. The grass above looks thin, stressed and slow to recover, no matter how much you fertilize.
Core aeration fixes the cause. A machine pulls small plugs of soil from the lawn in straight passes, leaving holes that let air, water and fertilizer reach the root zone. The plugs break down on the surface and return to the soil. For fescue, aeration in early fall is ideal, and for Bermuda and zoysia, late spring works best. Pairing aeration with overseeding or topdressing gives even better results, which is why many owners schedule them as a set.
Core aerators remove plugs of soil. Spike tools only push the soil aside and can make compaction worse.
Clay compacts easily, so most Middle Tennessee lawns benefit from aeration every year or two.
Aerate fescue in early fall and warm-season grasses in late spring, when they can recover quickly.
Seeding right after aeration lets seed fall into the holes, where it has good soil contact and germinates well.

You tell us about your yard and what you want, a new lawn, a fix for a worn one or a turf area, and we set a visit that fits your day.
We walk the property, measure each area, check sun, shade, soil and drainage and take photos of anything of note.
We explain your options for sod, turf or both, and give you a written scope with quantities, timing and clear pricing.
We mark utilities, remove old turf, set the grade, loosen and improve the soil and build the base before anything new goes down.
We lay sod in tight, staggered rows or install turf over a compacted stone base, with clean edges and tight seams.
We clean up, roll or brush the surface, walk you through the watering and care plan and set a reminder for your next check.
If water puddles or runs off, the soil is hard to push a screwdriver into or the grass is thin, compaction is likely.
They look like small pellets for a week or two, then break down and disappear.
Yes, especially if seeding. Normal watering helps the lawn recover.
Every year for heavy clay or high traffic, and every other year for lighter use.
