Bermuda Grass Guide

A tough, fast-spreading warm-season grass that loves full sun, handles traffic and turns tan in winter.

Bermuda grass is a warm-season grass that thrives in heat and full sun. It spreads aggressively by above-ground stems and underground rhizomes, forms a tight, fine-bladed turf and recovers quickly from wear. That is why it is common on golf courses and athletic fields, and why many owners of active yards love it.

The trade-offs are clear. It needs at least six to eight hours of direct sun, goes dormant and tan after frost, and may creep into flower beds and across property lines if not edged. Many owners accept winter dormancy in exchange for a tough, dense lawn in summer. It is mowed short, fertilized in the growing season and watered less than fescue once established. We install it in late spring and early summer.
